The papaya tree that Savi stares at to make the fruit ripen quickly so that she can pick one herself!
The family are so hospitable and are making us a part of their household. Raja Uncle's eldest daughter, who is 24 years old and ( in blue with her sister Sachitra with Aunty Indira in the middle) looks no more than 16 with her petite frame and sweet giggly manner announced that she is getting married in September. We all thought that Uncle had at last decided to arrange his beloved daughter's marriage. But with many deprecating laughs and coyness, she shared her love story with us.
Our sweet innocent Nadeesha had had a wrong number call on her mobile phone. The guy liked the sound of her voice: wooed her over the airwaves over the next two years, and as they say, the rest is history! This led on to Savi and Geoff's love story, Jason and Ashika's and then all the wedding photos came out! Altogether a lovely evening over a few glasses of Lion beer and Aarak, the surprisingly good local (what else) coconut liquor. The next morning we went a little way towards working it off as we strolled round the lovely lake in Kandy. This man made oblong of water with an island in the middle is a focal point in Kandy: a broad pavement is well kept around it with concrete seats dotted here and there for the many tourists and locals to enjoy the views. The brisk walk turned into a stroll with lots of stops to take photos of bats in trees hanging in trees, lizards and all manner of flora and fauna
We ended up at the Queens , a grand colonial hotel with liveried staff. We drank tea out of lovely battered silver teapots that had seen and heard countless tales spanning from the turn of the century to the faded grandeur of today. Savi and Sujith became nostalgic about her visit 2 years ago when she'd had dinner in the vast dining room, and come to watch him practising for his dancing completion, Time to climb up to the giant Buddha statue on the hillside which stands guard over the citizens of Kandy, before these two start to waltz down the marble lobby or something equally mad!
We had to leave our shoes at the bottom of the steps, which meant hopping from foot to foot, as our soles tried to cope with the hot baking stone. We are getting a lot of earthing Sashi ( if you are interested to find out more about this, and the benefits google it). We had good views of Kandy from here, of the lake in the distance, and the prison to the right of the photograph built in the hacienda style with the Temple of the Tooth behind it. One hopes that the prisoners were able to, or willing to imbibe some of the spiritualism of this wonderfully benign and peace loving religion from the chanting by the monks.
