3rd February 2012

Said goodbye to our host (another Raja) who had regaled us late into the night before with his adventures in the Merchant Navy over a glass or two of Arrak. This really is a lovely base for sightseeing in this area.

The Sri Lankans call their Head of State "The Road President". As we set off on freshly tarmaced roads we realised why. There seems to be road mending, widening and laying of new ones all over the island. As we headed further out towards the North to Trincamalee, where the Tamil Tigers had waged their 22 year civil war, we could feel the weather changing, with even a few drops of rain visible on the windscreen, but still warm. We also ran out of the newly laid Tarmac, and the journey became bumpier and slower.

We call Ashika the camel, because she drinks gallons and gallons of water, which is why she has such beautiful skin. However it does mean that she has to spend more pennies than us, and sometimes very urgently!

As we sipped our King Coconut water (yellow coconuts, not green as in India) at a roadside cafe, we saw that Ashika was pelting up the lane opposite which had a sign that we thought said "house for rehabilitation for war criminals" ie Tamil Tigers. We called across the road, but she was intent only on finding a grassy knoll to go behind. The irony was that the roadside cafe actually had a toilet which all the others used!

The Nivalani hotel is the most luxurious accommodation that we have stayed in in Sri Lanka, and it is nice to be near the sea.

The sea turned very rough a few days ago, and red flags warn us not to bathe, but it was lovely to paddle in the warm waters and walk along the powdery sand.

Savi decided to walk towards the restricted area, and even before she reached the Keep Out Prohibited Area sign, a rifle wielding marine appeared out of nowhere and waved her away! Security is taken very seriously here, with guards in banks and even in the streets toting firearms. We are here for two night in this idyllic setting. Reminded us of the hotel that Jason and Ashika got married in, in the south of the island. All we are missing are the other cousins: Nita, Parul, Bhavna and Hina! - Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
